Honeypot

A trap channel that warns before it acts.

Spam accounts tend to post in every channel they can see. The honeypot reserves one, marks it with a warning nobody can miss and applies the action you choose to whoever posts there.

Status: logic implemented, being tested with a simulator. Not yet validated on real Discord.

⚠️ DO NOT SEND MESSAGES IN THIS CHANNEL

This is a protection channel. If an account that is not exempt posts here, the configured action is applied automatically: softban.

What is a softban?

The account is removed with a ban immediately followed by an unban. Its messages from the last 1 h are deleted. It can come back with an invite, but is not re-added automatically.

What if this happened by mistake?

Contact the server staff to review your case.

Softbans completed: 12

Mock-up: a recreation of the warning using the product’s real copy. The counter is an example.

How it works

  1. You pick the channel

With /honeypot setup (or from the dashboard) you set the trap channel and the action. It is stored by ID, never by name.

  2. Garita posts the warning

A pinned embed explains what happens if someone posts, how to appeal and how many actions have been completed.

  3. Someone posts

Detection is local and instant: the incident is stored and its processing queued in a single transaction.

  4. The action runs

Step by step, saving each state before calling Discord. The warning’s counter updates without flooding the channel.

Activity

Press “Simulate” to see what Garita would do.

Runs in your browser: it doesn’t connect to Discord or store anything. Every new install starts this way: it logs without sanctioning.

What you can configure

Action
Softban (default), ban, kick, timeout or log only.
Message deletion
From 0 to 7 days of the account’s recent messages (default: 1 hour).
Timeout length
From 1 minute to 28 days (default: 24 hours).
Exemptions
Exempt roles and people; staff with moderation permissions are protected by default.
Threads
Threads under the trap channel are ignored unless you include them.
Observation mode
On for every new install: it records without sanctioning.
Appeal link
Optional; shown in the warning for anyone who thinks it was a mistake.

Designed to fail visibly

  • Every state is saved before the Discord call it announces.
  • After a timeout it never retries blindly: it checks the ban and its authorship first.
  • It never lifts a ban it did not place, nor one a moderator re-applied.
  • Disabling the module stops new incidents; softbans already in progress finish.
  • The counter is derived from incident states: each completed action counts once.

Limits

  • Discord offers no atomic ban + unban. A moderator can step in between the two calls; when the outcome is unclear, the case goes to human review.
  • Someone who falls into the trap by mistake needs an invite to come back after a softban; that is why the warning explains how to appeal.
